Eligibility for EXPERIENCED Florida State Certified Law Enforcement Officer Candidates:
You must currently be employed by a law enforcement agency within the State of Florida and have a minimum of ONE YEAR full-time sworn, law enforcement experience from a Florida law enforcement agency (not including time spent in the police academy).

Payment - $2,500 will be paid upon hire and $2,500 with be paid upon successful completion of field training.


*You must meet the criteria above and hired after January 1, 2023. Bonus is subject to applicable payroll taxes. All monies are subject to repayment if employment ends for any reason within the first 2-years.

Eligibility for OUT OF STATE Certified Law Enforcement Officer Candidates:
Candidates may be eligible for a one-time payment of up to $5,000 if hired as a newly employed full-time Certified Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Florida on or after July 1, 2022 through The Department of Economic Opportunity.

Examples of Duties


This position is offered to candidates who are either experienced, certified Law Enforcement Officers or have attended the Police Academy in the State of Florida and obtained their Florida Law Enforcement Certification.

Under direction of a Police Sergeant, performs general duty police work involving crime detection, prevention and investigation. Employee functions at journey staff level to perform law enforcement duties and is responsible for protecting the lives and property of citizens. Specific assignments are received from a Police Sergeant or superior officer, however, employee must be capable of reacting with considerable independent judgment and initiative in dealing with routine and emergency situations. Enforces vehicle parking and operating laws; issues and explains citations for violations.
  • Protects the lives and property of citizens; administers first aid to injured or afflicted persons; provides assistance to stranded motorists.
  • Searches for and investigates wanted and missing persons, and stolen property; investigates suspected illegal activity; prepares depositions; testifies and presents evidence in court.
  • Searches for and apprehends offenders; escorts suspects, criminals and prisoners to county jail, court hearings, etc.
  • Investigates crimes scene and accidents; administers breathalyzer tests; administers CVSA tests; searches for and preserves evidence; prepares depositions; testifies and presents evidence in court.
  • Directs traffic and assists pedestrians at intersections; escorts funerals and parades.
  • Promotes crime prevention through public awareness efforts; solicits cooperation of citizens to report crime and illegal activity.
  • Reviews and investigates public establishments for compliance with applicable laws governing alcohol consumption, traffic and parking regulations, etc.
  • Prepares various daily and periodic written reports and departmental forms; maintains logs; completes forms; prepares reports.
  • Assists with natural disaster preparedness and emergency response; directs evacuation traffic.
  • Assists with animal control services.
  • Attends training sessions and seminars as directed; assists with the training of new officers.

Typical Qualifications


To be considered for the position of Law Enforcement Officer, candidates MUST meet one of the following criteria exactly as stated:
  • Hold certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Florida AND a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college as recognized by the United States Department of Education.
OR

  • Hold certification as a Law Enforcement Officer (Florida or elsewhere within the U.S.) AND a minimum of two-years of experience (not including time spent in the Police Academy) as a Law Enforcement Officer in a full-time capacity AND hold a MINIMUM of an Associate's Degree/60-College Credits* towards a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university as recognized by the United States Department of Education.
Out-of-State certification must qualify for FDLE Comparative Compliance as outlined here:

OR

  • Current enrollment in an FDLE approved Police Academy with graduation scheduled within 90 days AND hold a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university as recognized by the United States Department of Education.
* Certified Law Enforcement candidates must hold a minimum of an Associate's Degree/60-College Credits at the time of application to be considered for hire, regardless of years of experience. Candidates approved for hire with an Associate's Degree/60- College Credits must sign a contract committing to obtain a Bachelor's Degree within 5-years of hire.

In addition to the above criteria, candidates must meet all of the following:
  • Meet the requirements outlined for Law Enforcement Officers pursuant to Florida State Statute and meet minimum standards as set forth by the Broward College Institute of Public Safety and the City of Coral Springs
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and a United States Citizen
  • Possess a current valid Florida driver's license and acceptable driving record at the time of application.

Officers hired with 1 to 2 years of sworn law enforcement experience begin on Step 2 ($72,703) of the collective bargaining agreement pay plan and those with 2 full years or more of sworn law enforcement experience begin on Step 3 ($75,641) of the established pay plan.
