Job Description Boston University's Office of the General Counsel ('OGC' or 'Office') is responsible for all legal matters affecting the University. Its twelve attorneys provide high quality strategic legal advice and representation to the University's trustees, executive officers, faculty and staff in academic and administrative units to help them achieve their goals.
The Legal Assistant is critical to OGC's ability to serve its clients. This individual will work with and perform administrative, clerical, special project and occasional paralegal work in support of four attorneys in the Office and will be responsible for a wide range of support for litigation and transactional practices. Duties include organization of attorney files, including preparing, maintaining and filing correspondence, pleadings, discovery materials, and claims reports; managing litigation dockets and court filings; managing attorney calendars, expense/travel reports and vendor invoices; and administering electronic and paper legal files. The Legal Assistant will also be involved in special projects for OGC and the supported attorneys, including preparing reports and meeting materials. The Legal Assistant will be responsible for ensuring that all activities are conducted seamlessly with attention to detail and consistent follow-up and oversight. The Legal Assistant will participate in and be exposed to the full range of activities associated with the practice of law in an in-house setting, which may prove useful to candidates considering law school. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, the ability to learn new skills, and excellent judgment. The candidate will have strong attention to detail, exceptional communication skills (both oral and written), and be able to multitask while managing competing deadlines. Time management and organizational skills are a must as is the ability to take initiative and follow up on open tasks in a timely manner. This individual should be proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and have the ability to learn new technologies quickly. Experience with WordPress, Concur, LegalFiles, and/or federal and state court electronic filing processes is a plus. The successful candidate will be required to submit an application to become a Massachusetts notary within the first month of hire.
